Aretha Franklin's Estate Is Not Here For Wendy Williams' 'Irresponsible' Remarks About 'Amazing Grace' Movie

Aretha Franklin's estate is responding to (shady) remarks Wendy Williams made about the upcoming Amazing Grace movie. Find out what they said inside...

Wendy Williams has pissed off Aretha Franklin's estate over comments she made about Amazing Grace, a documentary detailing the Queen of Soul's groundbreaking and best-selling album, Amazing Grace.

On Friday, Wendy talked about Amazing Grace during her Hot Topics segment. And the estate felt slighted that the daytime talk show was throwing shade. During the segment, she accused Franklin's family of mismanaging the singer's affairs through the years and made assumptions that there was a "Cousin Junebug" making decisions for the estate. She also shaded the movie by calling it a “one-camera shot” and she pointed out Aretha wasn't glammed up. She speculate the estate was doing the film for money.

Here's what Wendy said that caused them to issue to a response:

Franklin's estate dubbed Wendy's commentary "irresponsible" and said she was "mocking" the upcoming film, which was shot in 1972. They called her comments “inaccurate and disparaging" and said it “indicates that she has neither seen the documentary nor understands its import or intent" to make the assumptions she made on national television.

“Contrary to Williams’ derisive reference, there is no 'Cousin Junebug' making decisions for the Estate," the statement reads. Oop.

“1972 was the era of Black Power and Black Is Beautiful," the statement continued. "In her short natural hair and simple makeup, Ms. Franklin was in step with the times and appropriate to the occasion. There was no ‘showgirl glamor,’ no ‘pressed hair’ and no ‘eyelashes’ – the lack of which Williams ridiculed on her program. The simplicity of the presentation gives ‘Amazing Grace’ its power.”

Amazing Grace will hit theaters nationwide April 19th. By the way, Aretha's birthday is March 25th.

Jennifer Hudson will definitely play Aretha Franklin in an upcoming biopic. The news was confirmed during Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party when Clive took the stage to confirm Grammy/Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson is set to play the Queen of Soul. And Aretha handpicked JHud to play her in the film.

Sounds like another award winning role for JHud in the works.

The upcoming film will be backed by MGM. So far, Straight Outta Compton‘s Scott Bernstein and music producer Harvey Mason Jr. have signed on to produce the film. Harvey Mason Jr. worked with Aretha in the past and he also produced music for Dreamgirls, which starred JHud and earned her an Oscar. Now, MGM is looking for a screenwriter and filmmaker to add to the project.

They’ll be plenty of material to work with for the biopic as Aretha Franklin has a long list of career highs. She slayed the charts back in the day, is one of the most honored artists in Grammy history, became an icon in the civil rights and women’s movement, she’s in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the NAACP Hall of Fame, the Gospel music Hall of Fame and she has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The biopic is expected to be released next year. We're here for it.
