Ava Duvernay's "When They See Us" success was the perfect clapback at Donald Trump years after he called for the #Exonerated5 to be put to death.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve seen or at least heard about the success of Ava Duverny’s Netflix series "When They See Us," documenting the journey of the Central Park 5 (now dubbed the Exonerated 5) who were wrongfully arrested and convicted in the April 1989 rape of a female jogger in New York.

After its release, "When They See Us," went on to become one of Netflix’s most watched series with 23 million viewers. The series has also been nominated for 16 Emmy awards. Yes, 16.

Ava and the cast of the series have been riding high due to the success of the film, while also driving home the message that these injustices are still happening today to black and brown people all over the world.

During the Central Park 5 trial, a famous businessman by the name of Donald Trump placed an ad calling for the 5 teenagers to be charged with the death penalty. Today that man is the President of the United States, so Ava and the cast decided to create their own ad to highlight the true narrative.

“In May 1989, Trump took out a full page ad in the @NYTimes pushing the idea of the death penalty around the case of the Central Park Five. This week, 30 years later, @Netflix took out a full-page ad celebrating their story and thwarting his lies. #WhenTheySeeUs,” Ava’s Instagram caption reads.

While Ava is celebrating all of the success of "When They See Us," she recently dropped as director of an upcoming documentary about the late great legend Prince. The Wrinkle in Time director states creative differences as the reason for her departure, according to the Star Tribune. Netflix is currently looking for a new director for the documentary.

While we would love to see Ava take on a project as important as a Prince documentary, we are still proud of how she’s managed to successfully tell our stories. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
