Apparently, Rihanna texted "Slave Play" playwright Jeremy O. Harris during the show and people are poppin' off about her bad theater behavior. However, he's defending her. More inside...

Over the weekend, Rihanna stepped out in NYC and made her way to Broadway to check out Jeremy O. Harris’ “Slave Play," following her uber successful Diamond Ball.

The Grammy Award winner, who was invited to the show, made her way to the Golden Theatre in her Fenty 'fit with family and friends to check out a preview of the controversial sold-out show. And she ended up being the talk of the show afterwards.

So, if you know anything about Broadway, there are strict rules while viewing a play. It’s frowned upon to do ANYTHING other than watch the show. Apparently, RiRi was texting during the show and folks were up in arms about her "bad theater behavior". People were also pissed over the fact that Jeremy held the curtain for the pop singer, who was running late for the show.

“Two things I learned today about the Type of theatre maker I am: When my idol texts that she’s running late. I hold the curtain for her,” Jeremy tweeted. “When my idol texts me during a play I’ve written, I respond.”

A fan responded, asking why he hadn’t condemned Rihanna like HAMILTON playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda did Madonna.

"I respect Lin’s position, I just don’t share it,” he responded. “I’m not interested in policing anyone’s relationship to watching a play ESPECIALLY someone who isn’t a part of the regular theatre going crowd. Moreover, as ppl on this site know I’m famously ambivalent abt phone use in theatre"

He then explained why he decided to hold the curtain for Rih:

“To dead this weird discourse that has popped up…The patron saint of the play I wrote is literally a pop star, fashion icon, and Demi-goddess named Rihanna. Her words are all over it. She’s a 9th character in the play,” he tweeted. “When Dionysus is coming you hold the curtain.”

And that's that on that!

"Slave Play" will officially open on Broadway on October 6, 2019 and will run until January 5, 2020.  It's had its own fair share of controversy.  Back in January, follks tried to get it shut down after Jeremy has star Teyonah Parris "twerking in slave attire for her white oppressor".

The Root reported:

Jeremy O. Harris found his critically acclaimed pet project at the center of a firestorm on the heels of opening at the venerable New York Theatre Workshop on Dec. 9. Upon the reviews of Slave Play—accompanied by photos of lead actress Teyonah Parris in slave attire twerking for what appears to be her white overseer—an onslaught of outrage bubbled up on social media, on blogs, and even found itself in the form of a change.org petition calling for the production’s cancellation.

Clearly, Jeremy - a third year Yale Theater student - wasn't shook, even though he expected a different response to the play that is a present day, daring & savage comedy showing cosplay of sorts depicting slavery-time Virginia where the power dynamics have been flipped on its head.

“Honestly, I thought that black people would give me the benefit of the doubt. I felt that if it was controversial with anyone, it will be controversial with white people in a very real way.”

Speaking of RiRi:
