Joshua Brown was the key witness in the murder trial of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger that resulted in her being convicted of the murder of his neighbor, Botham Jean.  Friday night, just 3 days after Guyger was found guilty, Joshua was shot dead in his apartment complex. The details surrounding his suspicious and horrific death inside.

Joshua Brown was gunned down in his Dallas apartment complex just after 10p Friday, the same apartment complex he witness the immediate aftermath of Botham Jean's death at the hands of then police officer Amber Guyger. According to a statement from Dallas Police, he died of multiple gunshot wounds.  The killer is still at large.  Fox 13 reports:

Dallas police responded to a call for a shooting at the Atera Apartments complex around 10:30 p.m. Friday, police told CNN.

Officers were flagged down by witnesses who directed them to Brown, who was lying on the ground of the apartment parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Parkland memorial hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to a statement from Dallas Police.

Witnesses told police they heard several gunshots and saw a silver four-dour sedan speed out of the parking lot, police said.

Brown had no identification on him, so police couldn’t identify him until the medical examiner made a positive ID and notified the next of kin.

An attorney on the DA team, Lee Merritt, posted the news before police put out a statement identifying him as the victim of the shooting as he had already spoken to Joshua's parents. Merritt pointed out the harsh reality of gun violence facing black men, whether state sanctioned or not. He is urging police to get to the bottom of this stat:

It's hard to believe the timing of thus shooting and the horrificness of his death is all purely coincidental. Commenters on the story also have theories about Joshua's assailant(s):

Dallas PD finally identified Joshua as the victim after 10p Saturday, almost 24 hours after Joshua was shot.

What's also eerie is that when Joshua took the stand to testify for his slain neighbor, he was emotional not just because of what happened to Botham, but because he said he believes "it could have been him." He said then that he lived in constant fear of his life over gun violence.

Joshua's testimony was central to the case, as he is the only non police officer who saw Amber's immediate actions after shooting Botham Jean.

Brown testified that he met Jean the day he was killed. He said he was down the hall from his apartment when he heard the voices of two people who sounded like they were meeting by “surprise.” The gunshots followed “right after,” he said.

Soon after, from his apartment balcony, Brown said he saw Guyger come out to the hallway from Jean’s apartment on the phone. She was “crying, explaining what happened, what she thought happened, saying she came in to the wrong apartment,” he said.

Through his peep hole, Brown said he also saw the former officer “going back, back and forth on the phone.”

“And then, I think she went back inside, then came back out,” said Brown, who lived across the hallway from Jean.

We truly hope Joshua and his family receive justice.  This is extremely disturbing. R.I.P.
